SAFE in Hunterdon trains and manages a Crisis Intervention Team that responds to domestic violence and
sexual assault calls. This team is comprised of trained volunteers who provide 24-hour support, advocacy and
information for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. This advocacy comes at the time of the crisis
by responding local police departments and at the Hunterdon Medical Center.
The Domestic Violence Response Team (DVRT)
During the crisis period, the victim is often traumatized, and decisions regarding her/his legal options are
difficult and confusing. The DVRT volunteer is trained in legal advocacy, and her role is to explain to the victim
her/his rights. Additionally, the DVRT volunteer will speak with a victim about safety, and provide information
regarding the free and confidential resources that are available at the agency.
The DVRT started in 1990 with the Flemington police department and has expanded to provide services to
victims in all 26 municipalities in the county, as well as the Perryville and Kingwood state police barracks.
The Sexual Assault Response Team (SART)
The primary mission of the Sexual Assault Response Team is to meet the needs and concerns of the sexual
assault survivor by ensuring the immediate, compassionate culturally sensitive and comprehensive delivery of
multi-disciplinary services in a non-judgmental, victim-focused manner.
As professionals, Rape Care Advocates have ethical responsibilities to provide survivors with complete
information about legal, medical and therapeutic choices that are available to them so that they can make
informed decisions about the care and services they want to receive.
At the request of any survivor, any or all SART members will be made available. While not every survivor may
choose to report to law enforcement, he/she has the right to know what options exist and what to expect if
he/she decides not to report. Those survivors who do report have the right to sensitive and knowledgeable
support throughout the criminal justice process. Survivors who do not report may still access services
available, including, but not limited to counseling, evaluation and intervention.
