FLEMINGTON, NJ, MAY 14, 2009- SAFE in Hunterdon is able to empower more teens to live enriched lives free from violence, thanks to
Ronald McDonald House Charities of the New York Tri-State Area (RMHC-NYTSA), which recently awarded the local domestic violence and
sexual assault agency with $9,000. This grant will help to fill a critical services gap for the teen population in Hunterdon County, enabling SAFE
in Hunterdon to reach out to teens with an innovative teen program called SAFE for Teens.
Funding from RMHC-NYTSA furthers SAFE’s goals for the full program, aimed at providing middle- and high-school students with a safe
place to explore social issues affecting their lives. SAFE for Teens will provide teens an opportunity to discuss healthy relationships and dating,
peer pressure, self-esteem, sexual harassment, safer sex, violence at home and bullying, as well as school and classes and preparation for their
futures.
The vision for SAFE for Teens includes a full-time teen center (open from 2 to 9 pm on weekdays), with two days for middle school students,
and three days for high school students. A full-time program coordinator would oversee the activities and facilitate, well-structured,
disciplined programs incorporating educational and dramatic elements. These might include improv, art, music, creative writing and social
issues groups. To further a sense of community, SAFE will encourage our program attendees to share their creative arts projects with others.
Together with SAFE’s Community Educator, students will create art displays, and performances for local schools to promote healthy,
violence-free living.
“According to a national report issued by the U.S. Department of Justice, juveniles were more likely than adults to be victims of violence, and
violent crimes with juvenile victims peaked between 3 and 4 pm and declined substantially after 9 pm,” said Kim Spangenberg, executive
director of SAFE in Hunterdon. “With those startling statistics in mind, SAFE in Hunterdon is actively reaching out to teens in our community
in an effort to help create solid foundations for the success of tomorrow’s leaders. With this grant, RMHC-NYTSA has become a key partner
in making our vision for SAFE for Teens a reality.”
“Supporting SAFE in Hunterdon is a reflection of our mission,” noted Margaret Berger, executive director of the RMHC-NYTSA chapter. “We
are proud to partner with non-profit organizations serving the needs of children.”
